Chapter 25

Exhausted, bleeding, and an emotional wreck, Leif followed Arias through the maze of winding streets. After making it back to Bargog’s shop without being followed or attacked, they hurriedly snatched up their gear and were out the door in record time. As they approached the outer edge of Karcoa, the streets slowly filled with pedestrians, forcing Arias and Leif to slow to a hurried walk. The press of so many Ljosalfars, Svartalfar, and other beings had Leif on edge.

Night was in full swing on Alfheim as Arias and Leif stepped free of Karcoa’s trees and onto the massive walkway along the outskirts of the city. Before proceeding, Arias stopped and surveyed the area.

He turned to Leif, “Looks clear. According to Bargog, to find the Svartalfar village and the bridge, we will have to follow one of the main routes leading from Karcoa for a little over a day. The main road will branch off. One will lead towards the Ljosalfar city of Aegir on the coast, while the other smaller road will lead us to the Svartalfar village.”

He took an assessment of Leif, “You look exhausted. There is only so much one can handle, even as a Berserker, but we need to push on, at least for a little longer. The more distance we put between us and Karcoa tonight, the better. We can camp in the forest, but we will have to be a suitable distance from the major road to make sure our campfire isn’t spotted.”

Leif was in a full adrenaline crash, and he barely mustered a nod before Arias turned and led them away from Karcoa.

Once in the forest, Leif breathed a sigh of relief. It was short lived because Arias set off at a jog. Cursing under his breath, Leif followed. Every once in a while, a break in the trees would give Leif a stunning view of the night sky above. Unlike the green fire that danced in the sky above Midgard, the veil on Alfheim was a dazzling electric blue. It was mesmerizing to watch as the blue shifted to teal, then cobalt, then to sea foam. Leif, exhausted and distracted by the veil, tripped several times during their run. A few agonizing miles into their flight, Leif struggled to keep up with Arias, but Arias never wavered or slowed.

Finally, Arias abruptly stopped. A few moments later Leif caught up to him and nearly fell over. His feet and legs felt numb and his mind was a jumbled mess. “We should be safe for now,” Arias said while looking up and down the road. He pointed into the forest. “Let’s scout out a good spot to rest for the night. I’ll take the first watch.”

Leif was too tired to respond, so he merely nodded.

He guessed they had trekked close to a mile through the forest, looking for a suitable spot to stop for the night. Each step he took was a minor victory. After an eternal ten minutes, Arias thankfully ended their grueling hike.
